Why Sci-Fi?: Introducing J.A. Huss and T.J. Hudson

Welcome to the last day of Sci-Fi Spotlight week!  I've teamed up with a great group of indie authors of science fiction to run a promo that ends today.  You can snag 15 books for free and another 15 books for a mere 99 cents.

Last but not least, I'd like to introduce you to today's authors:

Why Sci-Fi for J.A. Huss?

"I write science fiction because I am a 100% science nerd. I enjoy everything about science, I have two science degrees, I write science textbooks for my main business, and I’m just an all-around nerd.  When I first started thinking about Junco as a character in my series she scared me.  She’s not anything like the girls I see in books today.  She’s bad, she’s got a filthy mouth, and she enjoys her job.  (Which happens to be killing.) I wrote this series because I like this kind of complex, slightly insane character. So basically, I write SF for me."

Be sure to get your copy of Clutch for 99 cents today!

For more on J.A., check out her trailer on YouTube, become a fan on Goodreads, like her on Facebook, follow her on Twitter, read her blog, and visit her website.

Why Sci-Fi for T.J. Hudson?

"I write science fiction (and fantasy) because my mind won't let me do anything else. You can blame my geeky background for that.

There are millions of fantastic stories out there. It does not matter what format; prose, film, theatre or any other, a good story is a good story. I do, however, find myself drawn to those that step out of the bounds of our world. This can be a step into the past, future or even a side step into an alternate reality. What these stories do is let characters address conventional problems from unconventional angles. Sometimes these will be pure flights of fancy, other times they fly very close to this world; and it is this speculative fiction where things get really interesting."

Why Sci-Fi?: Introducing C.E. Kilgore and Mark Whiteway

Welcome to day four of Sci-Fi Spotlight week!  I've teamed up with a great group of indie authors of science fiction, and we're running a promo from now until November 30.  You can snag 15 books for free and another 15 books for a mere 99 cents.

And now for today's authors:

Why Sci-Fi for C.E. Kilgore?

"I have always loved science-fiction, but I’m a true romantic at heart. The Science-Fiction Romance genre is still considered a fringe genre by many, but lately there has been new life breathed into it from many great writers. My hope is to contribute a well-written, fun and romantic take on science fiction through my Corwint Central Agent Files series. The first book in the series is Ghost in the Machine, and it explores one of my favorite science fiction themes: the development of emotions in artificial intelligence."

You can get a copy of Ghost in the Machine for free!

For more on C.E., like her on Facebook and follow her on Twitter.

Why Sci-Fi for Mark Whiteway?

"Writing Sci-Fi was a long held ambition of mine. As a kid, I read everything - Wells, Verne, Heinlein...At twelve years old, I wrote a novella with a pretty surreal ending. I still have it, hand-written in a huge ledger.

Following that, life intervened, and it was only in '09 that I determined to get back to writing. I had a lot of ideas running around in my head, but the Lodestone concept seemed the strongest. I soon realized there was no way to tell the story in a single book, and so the Lodestone Series was born."

You can get a copy of The Sea of Storms for free!

Why Sci-Fi?: Introducing T.S. Welti and Cate Dean

Welcome to day three of Sci-Fi Spotlight week!  I've teamed up with a great group of indie authors of science fiction, and we're running a promo from now until November 30.  You can snag 15 books for free and another 15 books for a mere 99 cents.

So, without further ado, here are today's authors:

Why Sci-Fi for T.S. Welti?

"Since I was very young, I've always loved sci-fi films and dystopian novels. Some of my favorites include Minority Report, The Matrix, The Giver, Brave New World, and 1984. More recently, some of my favorites have become Inception, Wool, and Delirium. However, I was never a big fan of high-tech science fiction. I often felt myself overwhelmed or bored with the technology. When I set out to write Darklandia, I set out to bridge the gap between a futuristic sci-fi film and dystopian fiction. I can't tell you how weird it feels, seven months later, to read the reviews and see my book being compared to so many of my favorite films and books."

You can pick up a copy of Darklandia for only 99 cents!

For more on T.S., like her on Facebook, follow her on Twitter, or check out her website.

Why Sci-Fi for Cate Dean?

"I grew up reading what is now called speculative fiction: fantasy, epic fantasy, sci-fi, the paranormal and the supernatural. So it was no surprise that I ended up writing that type of book. Though I head more in the direction of the paranormal and fantasy, I LOVE time travel stories. I consider those sci-fi, because they involve some kind of science, however farfetched. Choices is my first foray into time travel, originally written for a contest. It is a story of redemption, forgiveness, and making choices that change . . . well, you’ll have to read the story to find out. ;)  Thanks for hanging out with me, and until next time – read on."

You can pick up a copy of Choices for free!

Why Sci-Fi?: Introducing Saul Tanpepper and Anna Kyss

Welcome to day two of Sci-Fi Spotlight week!  I've teamed up with a great group of indie authors of science fiction, and we're running a promo from now until November 30.  You can snag 15 books for free and another 15 books for a mere 99 cents.

Today, it's my pleasure to introduce you to two other authors.

Why Sci-Fi for Saul Tanpepper?

"I love Stephen King’s works. So when a fan of mine asked why I write sci-fi, my natural response was to say I write horror.

“Computer codes, viruses, hacking,” she countered. “Hi-tech, biotech. Nope, GAMELAND is definitely sci-fi. Cyberpunk. Even biopunk.”

She was right. My past life in tech informs my writing. It’s therefore unsurprising that dystopias and the Undead populate my stories. Zombies are highly metaphoric of human overreaching. I guess I prove the old adage, “Write what you know.”

Which is horror science fiction."

You can get a copy of Failsafe for only 99 cents this week, and you can also pick up a copy of the first episode of the Gameland series, Deep Into the Game for free!

For more on Saul and his books, like him on Facebook, follow him on Twitter, become a fan on Goodreads, and check out his blog.

Why Sci-Fi for Anna Kyss?

"I never imagined myself a science fiction writer until I stumbled upon near-future novels. Dystopian literature fascinates me: the myriad of ways that we could destroy our world, the frightening extremes that governments could go to, the questions raised about existence itself. The vast majority of dystopic worlds depict stark, destroyed urbanscapes, which led me to wonder… What if the setting of the dystopian occurred in nature—a false utopia of sorts, in which the beauty of the location hid the secrets of the society? From that single question, Cerulean was developed. And another science fiction writer was born."

Cerulean is only 99 cents this week!

Why Sci-Fi?: Introducing Christine Pope and Tony Bertauski

Welcome to Sci-Fi Spotlight week!  I've teamed up with a great group of indie authors of science fiction, and we're running a promo from November 26-November 30.  You can snag 15 books for free and another 15 books for a mere 99 cents.

Each day this week, I'll feature some of the authors whose books are a part of the Sci-Fi Spotlight.  I hope this will help you, my readers, discover great new authors and books you'll love.

I'd like to kick this week's blog feature off with my own answer to the question:

Why Sci-Fi?

All good literature has the power to make us think, to shake the foundation of the things we believe, but I think good science fiction has a particular power to make us look ahead.  It forces us to consider the future impact of current events, and to think deeply about how those events will shape our future.  It makes us question how we want our world to look, and it makes us think about what we can do to ensure our world will look that way.

Contributor is only 99 cents this week!  You can also pick up a copy of Creators, the prequel novella, for free on Tuesday, 11/27, and Wednesday, 11/28!

Why Sci-Fi for Christine Pope?

"I grew up reading science fiction and fantasy. I adored those books, but even back then, when I probably wasn't the most analytical reader in the world, I noted a serious lack of strong female characters or interesting romantic relationships. So Blood Will Tell was inspired by the space opera I loved so much, but with a romance at the heart of the story. I guess I just wanted something with spaceships and explosions and kissing!"

You can grab a copy of Blood Will Tell for only 99 cents this week!

For more on Christine and her books, like her on Facebook, follow her on Twitter, or check out her website.

Why Sci-Fi for Tony Bertauski?

"Santa is not just about the presents. I wanted to get past that and see something deeper about this mythological figure. A story that’s more meaningful. For me, science fiction has always made me see life a little different. Perhaps a bit more clearly.

Claus: Legend of the Fat Man finds a cast of gritty, compassionate and courageous characters that make the journey to mythological fame despite their shortcomings and frailties. It pulls away the veil of magic, reveals the difficulties of love and loss and our struggle with life.

It’s not about the presents. It’s much more than that."

Get your copy of  Claus for only 99 cents this week, and you can also grab a copy of Tony's The Discovery of Socket Greeny for free!

Feature Fridays: This building will suck out your soul

If you can relate to this excerpt, I'm sorry.  I feel your pain, I truly do.

*****

Every Wednesday afternoon, the supervisors at New World had a meeting at two o’clock.  It was, without a doubt, the most awful part of Melinda’s week.  The supervisors almost always used every last minute, and there was nothing more deadly boring to Melinda than having to sit in a conference room for two whole hours while her boss and co-workers droned on and on and bickered amongst themselves.

On this particular Wednesday, the meeting promised to be even more fun than usual.  The CSRs had been receiving monthly bonuses for meeting call metrics and now the company had decided to do away with the bonuses.  The CSRs did not know about it yet, but the supervisors had been informed via an e-mail message from Jerry.

“Oh, great,” Blaine said, after he read the message.  He pushed away from his desk and looked at her, rolling his eyes.  “That ought to go over real big.”

“Yeah,” Melinda sighed.  She scrubbed a face over her hand.  “Score one for morale.”

“What does upper management care?  They’re not the ones who have to listen to the CSRs bitch endlessly about it.”

“Oh the joys of being a member of middle management,” Melinda sighed.

“Hi, Melinda.  Hi, Blaine,” a voice said.

Melinda stifled a groan as she turned toward the sound of the voice.  “Hi, Vic.”

“Did you see the message Jerry sent?”

“Yes.  Fantastic, isn’t it?” Blaine asked.

Vic gave him a look like a father about to scold a particularly disobedient and stupid child.  “Now, Blaine, you know that we all have to support this.  We need to support anything that’s good for the company.  The CSRs may not like it, but they’ll just have to understand that it has to be done for the good of the business.”

“Yeah, slow economy and all that,” Blaine said, with a poorly concealed expression of contempt for Vic.

Melinda felt the same way Blaine did.  She couldn’t stand Vic.  He was such an ass kisser and, besides that, he always smelled of mildew.  “It’s just going to be a big adjustment, that’s all,” she said mildly.

Vic peered at her through his too-small glasses before reaching up and fiddling with them.  “Well, we all have to adapt to change.”  He graced them with one of his phony, high-pitched laughs.  Blaine’s expression resembled that of a rabid dog.  “Anyway, Melinda, I wanted to talk to you about something.  Did you notice that Amy spent nearly five minutes chatting with Lillian rather than taking calls?” he asked in a stage whisper.

Why the hell are you watching my team?  Why don’t you pay attention to your own instead, you little prick? Melinda thought.  What she said was: “No, I didn’t.  I’m glad you told me, though.  I’ll definitely keep an eye on her.”
“I just thought I’d let you know.”  Melinda knew his tone was meant to convey a sense of camaraderie.  She wasn’t buying it, though; she knew Vic would gleefully stab her in the back given half a chance.

“I really appreciate it,” she said, making her voice as saccharine as possible.  She and Blaine both sat in silence, staring at Vic until he began to fidget uncomfortably.

“Oh, look, there’s Susan.  I needed to talk to her.  Susan!  Susan!”  He rushed out of their cube and over to accost the CSR.

“He.  Is.  Such.  An.  Asshole,” Blaine hissed through clenched teeth.

“Shhh.”  Melinda peeked around the corner and saw that Vic wasn’t all that far off.  “He is, but you don’t want to give him any fuel for his fire.”

“I just can’t stand people like him.  He’s so fake.  Why the hell don’t Jerry and the other managers see through that?”

“Because Vic is good at telling them what they like to hear, you know that.  What do you think this is, the type of place where people get where they are as a result of their honest, hard work?”

“Oh, right.  I forgot.  The most valued skill you can possess here is that of masterfully kissing arse,” Blaine said, his voice oozing sarcasm.

Melinda smiled at him.  “Tsk, tsk.  Bitterness doesn’t suit you.  In fact, it makes you even uglier than usual.”

“That’s the sweetest thing anyone’s ever said to me.”  A grin spread over his face, obliterating the sour expression he’d worn just seconds earlier.

“I should write for Hallmark, don’t you think?” Melinda asked, grinning in reply.

“Oh definitely.  Your talents are certainly being wasted here.”

“Aren’t all of our talents?”  Melinda sighed.

“Hitchcock should have done a movie about this place.  I’m sure people would’ve paid to watch a movie about an evil building that sucks out your very soul, until you become a mindless automaton shuffling slowly from one cubicle to the other while muttering, ‘Yes, boss.  Anything you say, boss.’  Don’t you think so?”

“I’m not sure.  It would probably be far too terrifying.  It’s certainly a lot more diabolical than anything Hitchcock ever thought up.”

“And speaking of terrifying things, it’s time for us to go to our weekly meeting.”

Woo Hoo Wednesday: NaNoWriMo is coming!

Welcome to another installment of Woo Hoo Wednesday, where I take the time to celebrate the small bits of everyday happiness that make life so sweet.

My first woo hoo goes to my decision to return The Eye of the Beholder to the KDP Select program, which allows readers to borrow the book from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library.  While I'm not so fond of restricting the number of outlets where my book can be purchased, the fact is that I get more lends than I did sales through other outlets, so it just makes sense to do whatever gets my book into the hands of the greatest number of readers.  I've already lent enough copies of The Eye this month that one more lend means I'll have exceeded my best month on Barnes & Noble.

Another big woo hoo goes to my serious productivity as of late.  I've been hitting the 3,000 words per day mark consistently for the past couple of weeks.  I'm now entering the home stretch with Phoning It In, so if edits go well, I'll have that book out before the close of 2012.  I'm looking forward to seeing how readers like my attempt at contemporary women's fiction.  I have to admit, I'm very, very fond of some of the characters in Phoning It In, and I hope my readers will be too!

My family deserves a huge woo hoo.  I am so lucky to be surrounded by such loving, supportive people.  I thank them for putting up with me when I'm in one of my moods because I'm having trouble writing.  They deserve a resounding woo hoo for making me feel loved and special every day of my life, even when I'm being rather unlovable.

And, lastly, a giant woo hoo for the fact that NaNoWriMo 2012 is just around the corner!  I am seriously excited about it this year.  I've done it for the past two years (Contributor was the product of last year's NaNo), and I enjoy it every year.  I'm especially excited this year because I have writing buddies!  If you've ever hemmed and hawed about doing it, I have this to say to you: DO EEEET!  Trust me, hitting that 50k mark feel like a HUGE achievement, and you'll feel good about it for months on end.  If you need someone to be your cheerleader, feel free to add me as your buddy and I'll urge you on.  My username there is NCiacchella.

If you're looking for something to read this weekend, why don't you pick up a free copy of Creators, the prequel novella to my Contributor trilogy?  I'm running a free promotion Saturday, October 6th and Sunday, October 7th, so be sure to get a copy.  I'm very excited to see what you, my awesome readers, think of it!

Happy Wednesday and may your week be filled with many things that make you say, "Woo hoo!"

Woo Hoo Wednesday: It's fall!

Why am I so happy right now?  Well, friends, I am not much of a sun worshiper.  Sure, I love sunny days as much as the next person, but I really hate the heat and humidity of summer in Michigan.  This summer was particularly horrible, and I feel like I spent the vast majority of it holed up in the house with the air conditioning cranked.  Now that it's September, the weather has taken a turn for the decidedly fall-like, and I couldn't be happier.  Bring on the 60 degree days!  I've been able to actually open the windows and go outside to get yard work done!  What's more, I can wear hoodies and jeans again.  I'm sorry to rain on the parades of those who love summer, but I am all about this weather right now!

A big woo hoo for my new computer screen!  I wasn't very happy about my old monitor dying, and it pretty much goes without saying that I couldn't function without one.  I'd been wanting a bigger one for a while, so the good thing to come out of the hardware failure was finally getting a much larger screen.  It's amazing how much more I can see when I'm working in full-screen mode on Scrivener.

Woo hoo number three is writing related!  After some deliberation, I decided to put Infiltrator on hiatus for now and work on my contemporary women's fiction novel, Phoning It In, instead.  As much as I love the Contributor series, it's nice to have a break and to work on something that has a completely different flavor.  I've been extremely productive the last couple of days, cranking out more than 3,000 words a day, so I'm hoping to finish the manuscript by the end of this month and get some editing in before NaNoWriMo starts.  My goal is to publish Phoning by the end of the year, which will bring me to a total of four books across three genres.  I'm excited to see what the market is like for contemporary women's fiction, but don't worry--I'm not forgetting my other manuscripts.  For NaNoWriMo, I'll be writing the next entry in the Fairytale Collection series, and then it'll be on to Infiltrator, book two in the Contributor trilogy.

Most exciting of all, though, is how well sales of The Eye have been going this month and last.  I'm on the verge of a major milestone, and it looks like I'll hit it by the end of the month.  It's so exciting to see something that I hoped against hope would sell 100 copies in a year do so much better than I'd ever dreamed!  I'd like to get my other books off the ground as well, but right now I'm extremely pumped because, thanks to sales of The Eye, it looks like we'll be able to make a trip to Europe next year.  This is huge because my husband is from Belgium and all his family lives there, so a 2013 trip would be the first time he's seen his parents, brother, and nephews in three years.  I'm very close with my family and can't imagine having to go that long between visits, so it means a lot to me that my income is contributing toward making a trip home possible for him.

What's got you pumped this week, my wonderful readers?

Oh, and just because you're awesome and my last run went so well, I'm doing another free run of Creators today, September 19th, so get yourself a copy from Amazon!  I'm really looking forward to seeing what readers think of both it and Contributor.  Happy Wednesday!

(Psst!  On Friday I'll give everyone a sneak peek of Phoning It In.)
